On Thursday afternoon, a vehicle was swallowed by a sinkhole on Strawberry Street in Richmond, close to the Department of Motor Vehicles, following a water main break that had occurred earlier in the day. The Richmond Police Department received a report of the sinkhole at 1:42 p.m. and promptly responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers found the car stuck in the sinkhole. The car has since been removed. The Richmond Department of Public Works attributes the sinkhole to the earlier water main break, which had flooded the road. Despite the area being cordoned off with traffic cones, the driver involved bypassed these safety measures, leading to the vehicle falling into the sinkhole.
Authorities have charged the driver, whose identity has not been released, with reckless driving. As repairs continue, Strawberry Street will remain closed until further notice.
